About the building: The Von Colon was designed by noted architect Hugh Lamb (c. 1850-1903) in the Renaissance Revival style and was built in 1900-1901. The year 1900 was a key dividing line between the end of the Gilded Age and the birth of the Progressive Era in American history. Until 1899, Lamb partnered with architect Charles Alonzo Rich (1850-1943) in the firm of Lamb and Rich. Their firm designed mansions and "modern" residential apartment buildings and other facilities for wealthy families and famous institutions such as Sagamore Hill, Theodore Rooselvelt's country house in Oyster Bay, NY (1887), Milbank Hall at Barnard College (1896-98), the main building of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (1887) among many others.
